Named for George C. Childress, the main author of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Childress is the seat of Childress County and is a center for local agriculture. Established in 1876, the city is now known for its production of cotton, wheat, peanuts, and cattle. Hunting for deer, doves and feral hogs is also popular in the area as well as bass fishing in nearby Baylor Lake.
Attractions
Baylor Lake. This 610-acre reservoir is a favorite fishing spot and also offers opportunities for camping and picnicking. 10 miles west of Childress on FM 2466.
Childress County Heritage Museum. Local history exhibits are housed in former post office building dating from 1935. Displays include local industries such as cotton, cattle and railroading, as well as Native American artifacts. There is also an exhibit recalling the Childress Army Airfield which operated during WW II. 210 3rd St. NW.
