Hempstead was established in 1856 as a stop on the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and became an important shipping point during the Civil War. Nowadays, Hempstead is a quiet town centered around area farms, ranches, and orchards. A number of fruit and vegetable stands and farmers’ markets mark the edges of town and Hempstead is nicknamed the “Watermelon Capital of Texas,” for its most distinctive product.
