The city of San Angelo was built around Fort Concho, a frontier fort established in 1867. Today, the city is a ranching center and home of the largest wool and mohair market in the country. Located on the Concho River, a treasure of the region are the pink Concho River pearls. In fact, San Angelo owes its existence to the Concho River that drew explorers and colonists here. The Concho, a major tributary of Texas’ Colorado River, means “shell” in Spanish, so named for the large population of freshwater mussels found there. These mussels sometimes produce pink, lavender or purple pearls that are especially valued as they are produced only in the Concho River basin. These freshwater treasures were known to Spanish explorers in the 1600s, and one legend says that Concho pearls were incorporated into the Spanish crown jewels. Today, licensed pearl collectors scour the river, its tributary creeks and downstream lakes for these naturally occurring beauties.
