These sister cities share a rich history in a Texas-sized industry: petroleum drilling and development. This area is the hub of the Permian Basin’s oil and gas reserves and many businesses in the city are related to the industry.
Dog-Friendly Attractions in Midland and Odessa, Texas
Hogan’s Run Dog Park. This large fenced dog park is located on Midland’s north side, near Hogan Park and next to the Sibley Nature Center. Although the address is on Wadley Avenue, the entrance to the park is around on Sibley Circle. The park is open during daylight hours (but closed for maintenance Monday mornings) and has lots of pet amenities including water fountains, seating, shady areas and agility equipment. It has a separate area for smaller dogs and a restroom for humans. 1201 E. Wadley Ave., Midland.
Odessa Meteor Crater. A unique stop near Odessa, the 40-acre crater site has been designated by the National Park Service as a National Natural Landmark. Formed over 62,000 years ago, this crater (the nation’s second largest) can be viewed by visitors at the Odessa Meteor Crater Museum. Located west of town, the visitor center and museum tells a fascinating story of the crater’s origin. Travelers can take a marked trail through the crater. You and your dog are welcome to stroll the site together but dogs cannot enter the buildings.3100 Meteor Crater Rd. (8 miles west of Odessa via I-20 at exit 108), Odessa.
Stonehenge Odessa. It’s probably the last thing you expect to see in West Texas: an almost full-sized replica of Stonehenge. Built in 2004, the limestone construction has the same footprint of England’s ancient original and it is 70 percent as high. Situated on the campus of The University of Texas of the Permian Basin it makes a good place to walk Fido and pose him for some dramatic photos. 4901 E. University, Odessa.
