Please share!

Located at the mouth of the Brazos River 50 miles south of Houston, Brazosport, along with the neighboring towns of Clute, Lake Jackson, Surfside Beach, and Freeport, is best known for its fishing, both saltwater and freshwater. Summer visitors also enjoy swimming, surfing, and crabbing in its waters. The area is a top birding spot and is home to several major wildlife refuges.

Attractions

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. Covering some 43,000 acres of coastline just north of Brazosport, this refuge is part of the Texas Mid-coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Exceptional birding and wildlife viewing is found here as well as fishing and hiking opportunities. Leashed dogs are permitted within the refuge. Stop by the Discovery Center at the Big Slough Recreation Center first for maps and park information. 2022 County Road 227.

Lake Jackson Historical Museum.  Learn about Lake Jackson’s storied past through interactive exhibits, including a flight simulator that lets you see the area from the air and a theater where you can watch home movies made here in the 1940s. 249 Circle Way, Lake Jackson.

San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. Located on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, this 34,679-acre refuge was established in 1969 to protect indigenous birds, as well as those that migrate here during the winter months. The refuge is composed of habitats ranging from freshwater lakes and salt marshes to coastal prairie and bottomland forest. More than 250 species of birds have been spotted here, including snow and blue geese, herons, egrets, and terns. Drive around the Moccasin Pond Loop to see some of the wildlife at work and at play, or come here to hunt, fish, or hike. 6801 CR 306.

Sea Center Texas. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department runs this marine aquarium, fish hatchery, and nature center to educate the public about the state’s marine resources and to protect them. The spotted speckled trout and juvenile red drum spawned from the hatchery here are used to stock bays around the state. The visitor center houses a number of interpretive displays, aquariums, and a touch tank where visitors can “pet” some of the marine life. Visit the Gulf aquarium to see nurse sharks, gray snappers, moray eels, and Atlantic spadefish, among others. 300 Medical Drive, Lake Jackson.

Shelling. Brazosport’s 27 miles of beaches are extremely popular with shell seekers who search for 600 species of shells along these sands. The best shelling is found on Quintana, Bryan and Surfside Beaches.
