Davy-Crockett-SpringThis historic town in East Texas was named for Davy Crockett, who was believed to have camped at local springs on his way to the fateful battle at the Alamo. The city serves at the county seat for Houston County, which became the first county with the founding of the Republic of Texas. Today Crockett is an agricultural-based community.

Attractions

Crockett Museum and Visitors Center. This museum, housed in a 1909 railroad depot, contains local history exhibits and displays focusing on the Republic of Texas. 101 S. First St.

Davy Crockett Memorial Park. This city park is named for the frontier hero who died defending the Alamo. Here you’ll find playgrounds, tennis, and picnic areas. S. Fifth St. at Anson Jones Blvd.

Davy Crockett National Forest. This expansive area covers 675,000 acres of East Texas forestland and offers plenty of outdoor activities a few miles east of town. 18551 TX 7 E.

Davy Crockett Spring. Legend has it that Davy Crockett camped at this site on his way to the battle of the Alamo. It’s near the town square and identified by an historical market. Brewer Park, W. Goliad St.

dog-friendlyMission Tejas State Historical Park. This park, located between the towns of Crockett and Alton, recalls the first Spanish mission built in East Texas in 1690. Today the park offers camping, picnic spots, hiking, and geocaching. 120 State Park Rd. 44, Grapeland.

MAY:
Lions Club PRCA Rodeo. Porth Ag Arena, 1100 Edmiston Dr.

AUGUST:
Bluegrass Festival. Both local and national bluegrass performers take the stage at this four-day event. Salmon Lake Park, 357 Salmon Lake Rd., Grapeland.

SEPTEMBER:
Piney Woods Polka Fest. Crockett celebrates German heritage with this musical event with polka bands and German food. Houston County Airport,149 Airport Rd, Groveton.

OCTOBER:
World Champion Fiddler’s Festival. This event has been held for over 70 years as fiddlers in different age categories compete for prizes. Davy Crockett Memorial Park, S. Fifth St. at Anson Jones Blvd.

NOVEMBER:
Christmas in Crockett. A classic automobile show, live entertainment, childrens’s amusements, food vendors and arts and craft are on the schedule at this holiday event. Crockett town square.
