Seguin (pronounced “se-GEEN”) has one of the most unusual nicknames of any Texas city; it’s “The Mother of Concrete Cities.” A Seguin chemist held several concrete production patents, so don’t be surprised at the many historic buildings utilizing concrete around town.
While dogs aren’t that interested in concrete, they will definitely love Seguin’s natural attractions, prime among them beautiful Starcke Park. The park is home to numerous pecan trees, an important crop that is honored with the “World’s Largest Pecan,” a statue located on the courthouse lawn at Court Street. It’s no longer the world’s largest but it still makes a fun photo with Fido!
Dog-Friendly Seguin Attractions and Activities
Seguin Dog Park. Located in shady Starcke Park, just off the busy highway but miles away in terms of peace and quiet, this dog park offers both large and small dog sections. Look for agility equipment and double gating; save time to enjoy the park (below) with your leashed dog, too. Info: TX. 123 Business in Starke Park; seguindogpark.com. Free.
Seguin’s Lakes. Seguin is surrounded by four lakes on the Guadalupe River that are known for their fishing but also offer your dog a place for a dip. The lakes include Lake Dunlap (I-10 to TX 46 exit west of Seguin, then 8 miles on TX 46); Lake McQueeney (I–10 to FM 78 exit, then west for 3 miles to FM 725, then turn right and continue for 1 mile); Lake Placid (I–10 to FM 464 exit, stay on access road); and Meadow Lake (I–10 to TX 123 bypass, then south for 4 miles). Free.
Starcke Park. Our dogs loved walking around this shady park after their visit to the dog park. Tall pecan, oak, and cypress trees and the Guadalupe River make this a great spot for a picnic with Fido. Info: South side of town, off TX 123. Free.
