Edinburg Scenic Wetlands & World Birding Center. One of nine designated world birding centers (and the first to be so named) this site covers about 40 acres of wetlands near the city center. Hiking trails and observation platforms offer nature viewing and a butterfly garden attracts dozens of species. 714 Raul Longoria Rd.
Museum of South Texas History. The adventurous past of the Rio Grande Valley is explored in this museum, from prehistoric times to the modern era. Part of the collection of artifacts is housed in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail building. On the courthouse square at 200 North Closner Blvd.
South Texas Motorcycle Museum. A gleaming collection of vintage motorcycles is on display as well as a replica of the “Captain America” cycle from the movie Easy Rider. 4705 E. Richardson Rd.
Southern Pacific Railroad Depot. This historic depot dates from 1927 and features exhibits tracing railroad history in South Texas as well as the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce Visitor information Center. 602 W. University.
Tejano Walk of Fame. A tribute to the area’s unique musical tradition, this attraction features marble stars honoring famous Tejano musicians. 415 W. McIntyre St.
Festivals
FEBRUARY:
Fiesta Edinburg. This week-long event celebrates the history and tradition of the town and the Rio Grande Valley with family-friendly activities including arts and crafts and live entertainment. Municipal Park, 714 South Raul Longoria Rd.
JULY:
Texas Cook’em. The highlight of this 4th of July event is the IBCA-sanctioned steak cookoff with cash prizes “at steak” for the winners. Live music, a children’s fun area and fireworks are also on the program.
NOVEMBER:
Welcome Back Winter Texan Event & Expo. Visitors who call the area home during the winter months receive a warm welcome with entertainment, food and drink and prizes at this annual celebration.
