Located on Lake Granbury, this community began in 1854. Today many Victorian buildings on the town square recall the town’s early days and have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1998, a Texas Highways magazine poll determined that Granbury had the state’s “Best Town Square.”
A favorite getaway from the DFW Metroplex, the town is home to several bed-and-breakfast inns.
Attractions
Acton State Historic Site. Tiny Acton cemetery marks the final resting place of Elizabeth Crockett, Davy Crockett’s widow. Five miles east of Granbury via US 377 and FM 167.
Barking Rocks Vineyard and Winery. 1919 Allen Ct.
Granbury Opera House. (pictured above) This historic 1886 opera house has been lovingly restored. Today it is used for a variety of live performances. 133 E. Pearl Street.
Granbury State Historical Cemetery. Among those buried here are town namesake General Granbury, Davy Crockett’s grandson, and notorious outlaw Jesse James. 801 N. Houston St.
Hood County Jail and Museum. This historic jail was built in 1885 and offers exhibits on local Hood County history. 208 N. Crockett.
Lake Granbury. This 8,310-acre lake on the Brazos River offers opportunities for fishing, camping and swimming. Near downtown off US 377.
U.S. Veterans Museum. Exhibits include artifacts from most U.S. wars as well as an extensive American Indian section. 601 Thorp Springs Rd.
Festivals
MARCH:
Texas Independence Day. Residents don cowboy garb as Granbury’s western heritage is celebrated with this annual extravaganza featuring live entertainment, reenactments, and rodeo events. Downtown.
General Granbury’s Birthday Celebration. This March event held on the Courthouse Square includes a parade, arts and crafts, barbecue cookoff, and children’s games.
JULY:
Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration.
OCTOBER:
Harvest Moon Festival of the Arts. Granbury celebrates with art shows, entertainment and food vendors. Granbury’s town square.
DECEMBER:
A Candlelight Tour. A self-guided event featuring carriage rides, holiday music and lots of holiday spirit.
