Harlingen-MuralHarlingen is a top destination in the Rio Grande Valley and makes a good central point from which to enjoy a look at all of the southern tip of Texas. Within a one-hour drive, enjoy a romp in the surf of South Padre, bird watching in national refuges, and more.

Like the rest of the Valley, Harlingen is a bilingual community, with Spanish spoken as often as English.

Attractions

Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum. The rich history of this region is traced at this museum which includes a traditional museum as well as historic buildings: the Harlingen Hospital, the restored home of Harlingen’s founder, and a stagecoach inn. 2425 Boxwood St.

Harlingen-Iwo-JimaIwo Jima Memorial and Museum. (pictured right) Located near Valley International Airport, visitors to this museum can view the original working model of the well-known World War II sculpture, the Iwo Jima Memorial. A nearby visitors center features exhibits on the battle as well as a film. 320 Iwo Jima Blvd.

Laguna Atascosa National Widlife Refuge. This wetlands refuge is a popular stop for ecotourists interested in learning more about the habitats of South Texas. The park includes birding trails, self-guided walking trails, and visitors centers. Birders come during the winter months as well as during fall and spring migrations. 22817 Ocelot Rd., Los Fresnos.

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.  Bird lovers flock to this sprawling area which is home to over 400 bird species as well as other wildlife including bobcats, coyotes and even endangered ocelots. Take a driving tour on a seven-mile loop or hike on over twelve miles of trails or ride the park tram for an overview. 3325 Green Jay Rd., Alamo.

Festivals

Blues on the Hill. Blues artists and fans flock from near and far to enjoy some soulful sounds in May, June, August and November. McKelvey Park, 1325 S. 77 Sunshine Strip.

NOVEMBER:
Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. Featuring birding trips to several area wildlife refuges, this festival also offers bird-related seminars and trade shows. Municipal Auditorium, 1204 Fairpark Blvd.

Winter Texan Fiesta. Shopping, food (and margaritas), music and information booths welcome the annual influx of Winter Texans to the Harlingen region. Golden Palms Retirement & Health Care Center, 2101 Treasure Hills Blvd.

DECEMBER:
Jackson Street Market Days. Downtown Harlingen is the scene for this holiday market featuring arts and crafts, live entertainment, and food vendors. Jackson St.
